More Gelato in Rome: New Favorite Gelateria

More Gelato in Rome: New Favorite Gelateria

There’s more gelato in Rome than you can even imagine.  However, not all gelato are made equal.

Thanks to Katie Parla, who had a gelato aperitivo event at Il Gelato, I discovered this gelateria. I wasn’t able to attend the event and had every intention to visit this gelateria the first opportunity I had. As I was near the Spanish Steps today, it was perfect opportunity. Il Gelato is located at Piazza Monte D’Oro 91/92,  only a short walk away from this famous Rome attraction.

The exterior of Il Gelato is deceiving simple that you would probably not even give a second thought about going in to check out the place.  Completely unpretentious.

However, the second I stepped in, I was like a kid in a toy shop.  I was awed by the number of flavors they had and wanted to everything!  They had a section for the different chocolate flavors, another for cream and another room for fruits flavors.  You were spoilt for choice so much so that you really don’t know where to start.

I had to run to another appointment and as time was not on my side, I quickly browsed through the selection.  What caught my eye when I first stepped in was the crema limone e fragoline (lemon cream with berries).  As you know, I am into lemons lately!

As I moved into the room with the fruit flavors, I knew I had to be back here really, really soon.  However, the choice was clear.  When I saw they had sesamo nero (black sesame) and green tea gelato (maccha), I almost jumped for joy. I have been craving Asian food lately and these two gelato flavors fit the Asian theme.  If they had azuki gelato, I would be in trouble!

I was very tempted to get those two flavors but at the end, I chose the sesamo nero and the crema limone e fragoline (with panna on top, obviously!.  No regrets and both were stupendous.

While you see interesting combinations at other gelateria, I have never seen flavors such as celery, tomatoes, peppers, gorgonzola,  cream cheese with walnuts (philadelphia e noci) and salted peanuts which were available at Il Gelato.

The price of the cone or cup with two flavors is €2 which is reasonable.  Unlike other gelateria, the serving is a touch smaller but personally, it’s perfect for me! The service here is more friendly and less touristy – a perfect combination.  It was empty when I was there this afternoon at 5pm, something you won’t see in other better known gelaterias.

I will for sure be back again next week to try the green tea gelato and ginger sorbet. This is definitely my new favorite place for gelato in Rome.
