Santa Severa – A day trip from Rome

With rising temperatures in Rome, everyone is headed to the seaside.   This includes me as I took a day trip to Santa Severa to visit my nieces and also to get a break from the heatwave.

Santa Severa is located north of Rome and from what I have been told that the further away you get from Rome the water gets better.  So for many, the water in Santa Severa is far enough to be decent to swim in (many say that the water in Ostia and Fregene are barely acceptable)

I decided that the best way to get there was to go by the train.  I took it from Ostiense Station and it’s the train with Civitavecchia as the final destination.  This train passes by hourly and it costs only €3.20 for a one-way ticket.  The price actually depends on where you are taking it from.  I believe from Termini it is just a touch more expensive.

Just a reminder – make sure you validate your ticket before getting on the train.  The machines are usually yellow in color and at Ostiense you will find them before taking the steps to the platform.

On the train, I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and comfort and since  it wasn’t too crowded and I easily found a seat.  Overall, I am happy to say that the train ride was relaxing.

When I got to Santa Severa station, I saw there was a public bus available but I was fortunate enough to be picked up by my sister-in-law.

Santa Severa at this time of the year is crowded with families with children as many parents commute back and forth everyday as it is only an hour from Rome.  On top of that, it’s a short walk to the beach which makes it convenient for those with children.

A rental home can costs €3500 upwards for the month of July.  There is a hotel near the beach and I believe the price is about €100 a night (please check as I am not exactly sure)

If you want a break from the hustle and bustle of Rome and are looking to spend the day at the beach, Santa Severa is the ideal place.
